Questions People Ask During Turbulent Times #4

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?

We've looked at two reasons the turbulence in your life may be happening.  Now lets look at a final reason:

3.     It could be turbulence caused by someone or something else and you are an innocent victim.

Ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, everything changed.  All men and women are now born with a sin nature and naturally live a life prompted and motivated by that nature.  We now want what we want; when we want it.  In fact, as a result, we have become experts in rationalization and often redefine the truth to justify our morality and selfishness.

Our self-centered decisions to get what we want can often become very destructive to the lives of those around us.  When that happens you become the innocent victim of another’s sinful behavior and selfish choices.  Simply living life in this world can be dangerous to your well-being.

Examples of this are car accidents where one is hit by a drunk driver.  Others experience this unwanted turbulence when suffering as a victim of abuse or a crime.  It’s not fair but it is a cause of some of the turbulence you face.

Another consequence of Adam’s sin is that the earth was cursed (Gen 3:17).  Our world was affected by sin and we now see the horrible tragedies that stem from droughts, storms, fires, floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes.  You have no control over these natural disasters, neither are you immune and protected from them.  You didn’t deserve to crushed by one of these natural disasters but, nonetheless, are still negatively impacted by them.

So what do you do when confronted with this kind of turbulence?  The Bible tells us to pray and keep our focus on God.  It also tells us to hang in there by trusting in a God who is all-knowing and all-powerful.  We may not be able to understand why God would allow certain tragedies to take place, but we can be certain that He will never do anything that is contradictory to His nature and His commitment to His people.  His judgments are always just.  The reason for the turbulence may not make sense at the time but we can always trust Him.

“In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.”          1 Peter 1:6-9 (NASB)

God has also made another promise that helps during times like this.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”    Romans 8:28 (NASB)

He says He is always able to pick up the broken pieces of one’s life and reshape them into something good.  This is a promise that says He will not give up on you even in your brokenness.  Though there may be times when you are an innocent victim in turbulent times, God will never forsake you.

Next time I’ll deal another of those questions we tend to ask in the midst of turbulent times.

“HOW DID I GET INTO THIS MESS?
